My House — A1 English Vocabulary

This A1 vocabulary list gathers 20 beginner English words about my house — rooms, furniture and the everyday things at home. Every word comes with a simple definition, its British-English pronunciation and a natural example sentence, so you learn each one in real context.     A building where people live.

    “My house has a red door.”

  2. kitchen/ˈkɪtʃ.ən/

    The room where you cook and prepare food.

    “She is cooking dinner in the kitchen.”

  3. bedroom/ˈbed.ruːm/

    The room where you sleep.

    “I sleep in my bedroom every night.”

  4. bathroom/ˈbɑːθ.ruːm/

    The room with a toilet and a place to wash.

    “He is washing his hands in the bathroom.”

    The part you open to go in or out of a room.

    “Please close the door.”

  6. window/ˈwɪn.dəʊ/

    The glass opening in a wall that lets in light.

    “Open the window for some fresh air.”

  7. table/ˈteɪ.bəl/

    A flat piece of furniture with legs, used to eat or work on.

    “We eat dinner at the table.”

  8. chair/tʃeə/

    A seat for one person, with a back and four legs.

    “Please sit on this chair.”

  9. bed/bed/

    The piece of furniture you sleep on.

    “The cat is sleeping on my bed.”

  10. sofa/ˈsəʊ.fə/

    A long, soft seat for two or three people.

    “We watch television on the sofa.”

  11. lamp/læmp/

    A small object that gives light.

    “I read my book with a small lamp.”

  12. floor/flɔː/

    The flat surface you walk on inside a room.

    “The keys are on the floor.”

  13. wall/wɔːl/

    The side of a room that goes from the floor to the ceiling.

    “There is a picture on the wall.”

  14. roof/ruːf/

    The top cover of a building.

    “A little bird is on the roof.”

  15. garden/ˈɡɑː.dən/

    The area of ground next to a house for plants and grass.

    “We have flowers in the garden.”

  16. room/ruːm/

    A separate space inside a building with its own walls.

    “This room is very big and bright.”

  17. key/kiː/

    A small metal object used to open a lock.

    “I need my key to open the door.”

  18. mirror/ˈmɪr.ə/

    A glass surface that shows your reflection.

    “She looks at herself in the mirror.”

  19. stairs/steəz/

    A set of steps for going up or down inside a building.

    “I go up the stairs to my room.”

  20. kettle/ˈket.əl/

    A container used to boil water.

    “The kettle is hot; the tea is ready.”
