Terms of Service
The rules for using Virtuous English Academy. Short version: it is free, it is for learning, please do not scrape it or resell it.
Last updated: 9 September 2026Accepting these terms
By using virtuousenglishacademy.com ("VEA", "the Service") you agree to these terms. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the Service.
If you are using VEA on behalf of a school or organisation, you confirm you are allowed to accept these terms for it.
What the Service is
VEA is a free, CEFR-aligned English-learning website: grammar lessons from A1 to B2, graded reading stories, vocabulary lists, quizzes, a placement test and a study dashboard.
Everything listed above is free of charge for personal study and classroom teaching. It is not currently funded by advertising: the AdSense application is pending and no ad revenue is earned. The optional Certified English Placement Exam costs $6; it is the one paid product on the site. The exam is optional and nothing else on the site depends on it.
We may add, change, suspend or remove any part of the Service at any time. We will try not to break things you depend on, but we cannot promise a feature will exist forever.
Accounts
You can use almost all of VEA without an account. An optional free account saves your progress, flashcards and notes, and syncs them between your devices.
- Give accurate information when you sign up, and keep your sign-in details to yourself.
- For an email-and-password account, verify that you can receive email at the address before the membership becomes active.
- You are responsible for what happens under your account.
- One person, one account. Do not share an account or let someone else use yours.
- Tell us promptly if you think someone else has got into your account.
Creating an account includes essential account, security, exam and service-update email. Learning tips, product news and offers are marketing and use a separate optional choice that you can withdraw at any time.
You can delete your account at any time, yourself, without asking us โ see the Privacy Policy for what that removes.
Acceptable use
Please do not:
- Scrape, crawl, harvest, mirror or bulk-download our lessons, datasets or question banks.
- Republish our material, or present it as your own, anywhere else.
- Resell access to the Service or any part of it.
- Try to break, overload, probe or gain unauthorised access to the Service or another user's account.
- Upload anything unlawful, abusive or infringing into notes, flashcards or messages.
- Interfere with, hide, or artificially click advertising if it is shown on the site.
Automated extraction of our content or data is not permitted and may be pursued under applicable intellectual-property and computer-misuse law.
Our content, and your licence to use it
The lessons, curriculum structure, question banks, graded stories, linguistic datasets, interface design and code that make up VEA belong to Virtuous English Academy and are protected by copyright.
What you may do
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-commercial and revocable licence to use the Service for your own learning โ or, if you are a teacher, to teach with it in your classroom at no cost. Printing a page for your own class is fine. Linking to us is always welcome.
What you may not do
Anything else: redistribution, republication, resale, inclusion in a commercial database or training corpus, or removal of our attribution.
Content you create
Notes, flashcard decks and writing-task answers you produce on VEA remain yours. We store them so we can show them back to you, and we do not publish them, sell them or use them to train anything.
You give us only the permission we need to host and display your content back to you as part of running the Service.
Tests, levels and certificates
Our placement test and level test give you a considered estimate of your CEFR level, and the certificate you can download records that estimate.
VEA certificates are not an accredited or officially recognised qualification. They are not equivalent to IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge or any state examination, and no university, employer or immigration authority is obliged to accept one.
Use them to track your own progress and to motivate yourself. Do not present one as a formal qualification.
Two kinds of certificate exist and the verification page tells them apart. A self-reported certificate comes from the free level test, which is marked in your own browser. A verified certificate comes from the paid exam, which is marked on our servers against answer keys you never see. Both carry the disclaimer above.
The Certified English Placement Exam
This section applies only if you buy the exam. It is the one paid product on VEA and costs $6.
What you are buying
- Two graded attempts at the five-part exam โ grammar and vocabulary, reading, listening, writing and speaking โ with the second unlocking 14 days after the first.
- Server-scored CEFR bands for grammar and vocabulary, reading and listening, and an AI-marked band with written feedback for your writing. You sit the speaking part and we store your recordings, but they are not marked and no band is given for them โ your certificate names the skills it covers.
- A verified, shareable certificate stating your CEFR level, issued if the attempt passes our integrity checks.
Submitting the exam uses an attempt. A purchase carries two, and the second only becomes available 14 days after your last attempt โ the wait exists so the exam measures your English rather than your memory of the questions. Once your attempts are used, a further attempt is a further purchase.
What you are not buying
- A particular result. We sell an assessment, not a grade. Being placed lower than you hoped is the assessment working.
- An accredited qualification โ see the note above.
- Human marking, or a mark for speaking. Your writing is marked by AI against a published rubric โ if you believe that band is wrong, tell us and a person will review it. You sit the speaking part and we keep your recordings, but nothing marks them at present and your certificate does not carry a speaking band.
Integrity
The exam runs full-screen and records when the window loses focus, leaves full screen, or refuses a copy or paste. Repeated events flag the attempt. A flagged attempt still gets a result, but the certificate is held until we have reviewed it. If we conclude the attempt was not your own work we may withhold or withdraw the certificate; in that case we will tell you why, and you may ask us to look again.
Payment and refunds
The sale is handled by Dodo Payments as merchant of record: it is the seller on your bank statement, it issues your invoice, and it accounts for any tax due. Refunds are set out in full in our Refund Policy, which forms part of these terms.
If something goes wrong on our side
If a technical fault on our side stops you finishing an attempt โ the exam does not load, a recording is lost, the marker never returns a result โ write to us and we will restore the attempt or refund it. That is our fault to fix, not your money to lose.
Advertising disclosure
We have applied to Google AdSense (publisher ID ca-pub-6733098045611992) and its integration is installed on eligible editorial pages. As of 9 September 2026, Google has not approved this site, no ads are being served and we earn no advertising revenue.
If serving begins, ads may appear only on eligible editorial pages; policy pages, tests, games, account screens, navigation pages and the certified exam remain ad-free. A future ad is not an endorsement by us of its advertiser, product or claims.
What advertising means for your data is set out in the Privacy Policy and the Cookie Policy.
Links to other sites
VEA links to external references and resources. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, their accuracy or their privacy practices. Follow them at your own discretion.
Disclaimer of warranties
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not guarantee any particular learning outcome, any specific timeframe for reaching a level, or uninterrupted, error-free availability.
We work hard on accuracy, but language teaching involves judgement and no explanation fits every case. Nothing on VEA is professional, legal, medical or immigration advice.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Virtuous English Academy is not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss arising from your use of the Service โ including lost progress, lost data or lost opportunity.
Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected.
Suspension and termination
You may stop using VEA whenever you like and ask us to delete your account. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, particularly the acceptable-use rules, and will normally tell you why.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The date at the top of this page always shows the current version, and we will flag anything significant on the site. Continuing to use VEA after a change means you accept it.
