English Minimal Pairs: 48 Pairs with Audio

A minimal pair is two words separated by exactly one sound. They are the most efficient pronunciation exercise there is, because they isolate a single contrast and give you an immediate yes-or-no answer about whether you can hear it. Below are 48 pairs across 12 contrasts, every word taken from our own vocabulary lists with its real British transcription.

Hear it before you say it

The instinct is to start producing the sound straight away. That is the wrong order, and it is why so much pronunciation practice produces so little change. If you cannot reliably hear the difference between two sounds, you have no way of knowing whether the one you just produced was the one you meant — so you practise the error as diligently as the correction, and it sets.

So split the work in two. Stage one is perception: have someone read pairs at random, or press one 🔊 button with your eyes closed, and decide which word it was. Keep score. When you are consistently right, and not before, move to stage two, production: say both words of a pair aloud, one after the other, and make them audibly different from each other. If a recording of you saying them sounds the same on playback, the contrast has not landed yet.

How each pair on this page was checked

Pronunciation pages are unusually easy to get wrong, because a pair that looks minimal often is not once you write both transcriptions out. Every pair below is verified mechanically before the page is built.

Long /iː/ vs short /ɪ/

The most consequential vowel contrast in English and the one most widely merged. It is not only length: /iː/ is tighter and further forward, /ɪ/ slacker and more central. Merging them makes “sheep” and “ship” the same word, and the sentence has to rescue the meaning.

/ʃ/ vs /tʃ/

/ʃ/ is a continuous hiss you could hold for five seconds; /tʃ/ begins with a full stop of the tongue and bursts. Learners whose first language has only one of the two tend to produce a soft /ʃ/ everywhere, and “watch” collapses into “wash”.

/θ/ vs /s/

Both are voiceless and both hiss, but /θ/ is made with the tongue between the teeth and /s/ behind them. Substituting /s/ is the single most recognisable non-native feature in English, and it is fixed by tongue position rather than by effort.

/s/ vs /z/

The same mouth, the voice on or off. It matters more than it looks: it separates advice from advise, and it decides how every plural, possessive and third-person verb in the language ends.

/l/ vs /r/

For /l/ the tongue tip touches the ridge behind the teeth; for /r/ it must not touch anything at all. English /r/ is never rolled or tapped, and a rolled one is heard as /l/ or as a foreign accent rather than as an error.

/b/ vs /v/

/b/ closes both lips; /v/ puts the top teeth on the bottom lip and never closes. Speakers of Spanish, Greek and several other languages have one phoneme covering the whole territory, so the two arrive fused.

/ɜː/ vs /ɔː/

Spelling actively misleads here: “work” and “walk” differ by one vowel and look as though they should not. /ɜː/ is central with neutral lips, /ɔː/ is back with the lips firmly rounded.

Final /t/ vs /d/

English keeps final consonants audible. Many languages devoice them, which turns “ride” into “right” and takes the past tense with it. The trick is not volume: it is that the vowel before /d/ is noticeably longer.

/k/ vs /ɡ/

Identical tongue position, voice off or on — and /k/ additionally carries a puff of air at the start of a stressed syllable. Both cues point the same way, so getting either one right is usually enough.

/eɪ/ vs /aɪ/

Both glide up to /ɪ/; they differ in where they start. /eɪ/ begins with the jaw half closed, /aɪ/ with it wide open. Spelling gives almost no help — compare “raid” with “ride”.

/e/ vs /ɪ/

A small distance in the mouth and a large one in meaning. Listen for the jaw: /e/ is a touch more open. The pair below is the classic one, because both words are A1 and both come up constantly in a classroom.

/f/ vs /v/

The voiceless and voiced halves of the same sound, and the pair that decides whether you have written a noun or a verb — belief against believe.

When the pair is a grammar problem in disguise

Two of the contrasts above are not really about pronunciation at all. The final /t/ against /d/ set decides whether a listener hears a present tense or a past one, because the regular past ending is a single consonant at the end of a word — exactly the position where many languages devoice or drop consonants. A speaker who cannot end a word in /d/ cannot be heard using the past simple, however well they know it.

The /s/ against /z/ set does similar work for plurals, possessives and third-person verbs. English writes all of them “s” and pronounces them /s/ or /z/ depending on the sound in front. Get it wrong and you are still understood; leave the ending off entirely — which is the usual next step — and the grammar disappears with it. If those two sets are hard, the fix is worth more than its size suggests.

What is a minimal pair?

Two words that differ in exactly one sound, in the same position — ship and sheep, light and right. Because everything else is held constant, the pair isolates one contrast, which makes it the cleanest possible test of whether you can hear that contrast.

How do I practise with minimal pairs on my own?

Listen before you speak. Play one word of a pair without looking, decide which it was, then check. Repeat until you are right consistently — that is the perception stage, and it usually takes a few days per contrast. Only then start producing them, because a sound you cannot reliably hear is a sound you cannot reliably correct.

Why can I not hear the difference at all?

Because your ear was tuned to your first language in infancy and stopped tracking distinctions it did not need. This is normal and it is reversible in adults, but it takes deliberate exposure rather than volume of listening. Focus on one pair at a time and give it a few minutes a day.

Which contrasts should I practise first?

The ones that change meaning in words you actually use. For most learners that is /iː/ against /ɪ/, /l/ against /r/, /θ/ against /s/, and the final /t/ against /d/ that carries the past tense. Work down this page and note which sets you find genuinely hard — that is your list.

Does it matter if I confuse two sounds nobody notices?

Much less than course books imply. The test is functional: does the error make a different English word, or does it just sound slightly foreign? A slightly foreign /r/ costs you nothing. Turning rice into rise costs you the sentence.
