Adjectives vs Adverbs of Manner: A1 Exercises

60 exercises · 20 multiple choice · 20 fill in the blank · 20 word ordering

Adjectives and adverbs answer different questions. An adjective answers what is it like and attaches to a noun: she is a careful driver. An adverb of manner answers how is it done and attaches to a verb: she drives carefully. Most adverbs are made by adding -ly to the adjective, which makes the pair easy to spot once you know which question you are answering.

The complications are small but persistent. Good has the irregular adverb well; fast, hard and late are identical in both roles; and hardly and lately are separate words with completely different meanings. The other trap is the linking verbs — look, sound, taste, smell, feel, seem — which take an adjective rather than an adverb, so it smells good is right and it smells well is not. These sixty exercises drill all four points.
