The present simple describes habits, routines and things that are generally true: I work in a bank, the shop opens at nine, water boils at a hundred degrees. It is the tense a beginner uses most, and its form is almost entirely regular — with one exception that swallows an enormous amount of learner attention.
That exception is the third-person -s. He, she and it add an ending that no other subject takes, and the spelling of that ending changes after certain letters: watch becomes watches, study becomes studies, go becomes goes. These sixty exercises drill the -s and its spelling rules first, then the negatives and questions where the -s moves onto does and the main verb goes bare, and finally the time expressions — always, usually, every day — that signal the tense in the first place.
What these exercises drill
Every question in this set tests one of the rules below. If any of them is unfamiliar, read the Present Simple Tense lesson first — practice before the rule is understood mostly teaches you your own guesses.
- Use the present simple for habits, routines, facts and timetables.
- Add -s (or -es) to the verb with he, she and it.
- Negatives use don't/doesn't + base verb.
- Questions use do/does + subject + base verb.
