What these exercises drill
Every question in this set tests one of the rules below. If any of them is unfamiliar, read the Irregular Verbs lesson first — practice before the rule is understood mostly teaches you your own guesses.
- Irregular verbs form the past without -ed — each must be learned individually.
- Some high-frequency verbs cluster into sound patterns you can exploit.
- Some verbs do not change at all.
- In negatives and questions the irregular form disappears — did + base verb.
About Irregular Verbs at A2
About two hundred English verbs refuse the -ed ending, and the ones that refuse are, inconveniently, the ones you need most: go, have, do, say, take, come, get, make, see. There is no rule that predicts them, which is why this topic is learned by exposure rather than by explanation — and why an exercise set is worth more here than another page of theory.
These sixty exercises put the irregular forms into sentences instead of lists, because a verb recalled from a column and a verb produced mid-sentence are two different skills. They also drill the rule that catches out almost every A2 learner: after did, the verb goes back to its base form. You went is correct and Did you went is not, no matter how irregular the verb is. Time expressions — yesterday, last week, in 2019, two years ago — appear throughout, since they are what signals the past simple in the first place.
The errors these questions are built to catch
-
I taked a taxi to the airport.
I took a taxi to the airport.
Take is irregular; adding -ed to an irregular verb is the classic overgeneralisation.
-
Did you saw the news?
Did you see the news?
After did the verb must return to its base form.
-
He falled off his bike.
He fell off his bike.
Fall → fell — no -ed form exists.
After this set
You can now report finished events. The next step is describing what was already in progress when they happened, which is the job of the past continuous.
