Pronouns are the words that stop English becoming unreadable. Without them every sentence would have to repeat the name it just used, and a paragraph about two people would be exhausting. The cost of that convenience is a choice: I or me, he or him, we or us — and the choice is decided entirely by position, not by politeness or by how the sentence sounds.
The rule is that a pronoun before the verb is the subject form, and a pronoun after the verb or after a preposition is the object form. These sixty exercises drill it in the three places learners get it wrong: after prepositions (between you and me, not between you and I), in double subjects (my brother and I, not my brother and me), and in short answers, where English keeps the object form after it's — it's me. The set also covers it and they for things, which is where many languages differ from English and interference is strongest.
What these exercises drill
Every question in this set tests one of the rules below. If any of them is unfamiliar, read the Subject and Object Pronouns lesson first — practice before the rule is understood mostly teaches you your own guesses.
- Subject pronouns (I, he, she, we, they) do the action; object pronouns (me, him, her, us, them) receive it.
- Object pronouns also follow prepositions: to, for, with, about.
- You and it are identical in both roles.
- In short answers and comparisons, spoken English prefers the object form.
