The Zero Conditional: A2 Exercises

60 exercises · 20 multiple choice · 20 fill in the blank · 20 word ordering

The zero conditional describes what is always true. If you heat water to a hundred degrees, it boils — not sometimes, not probably, always. Both halves of the sentence sit in the present simple, and that symmetry is what marks the pattern out: if plus present simple, then present simple, with no will anywhere in it.

It covers three kinds of statement that A2 learners need constantly: scientific and general facts, personal habits and routines, and instructions. If I drink coffee after six, I don't sleep is a fact about one person; if the light flashes, press the red button is an instruction. In both, when can replace if with almost no change of meaning, which is a useful test — if the sentence still works with when, the zero conditional is the right choice. These sixty exercises drill the form, the comma rule and that if-versus-when test.
