Articles are three tiny words that carry an enormous amount of information, and speakers of languages without them can reach a high level in English while still getting them wrong in almost every paragraph. The core distinction is not grammatical but conversational: a introduces something new to the listener, the refers to something both of you can already identify. I bought a car last week, and the car has already broken down — first mention takes a, second mention takes the, and that pattern runs through most of what you write.
Beyond that come the cases that have to be learned rather than reasoned out. The zero article is required for general plurals and uncountables — dogs bark, water is essential — where learners often insert an unnecessary the. Institutions split by meaning: go to school for the purpose, go to the school for the building. Geography has its own rules, with the for rivers, oceans, mountain ranges and plural countries, and nothing at all for lakes, continents and most single countries. These sixty exercises drill first and second mention, the zero article, the fixed institutional phrases and the geographical patterns.
What these exercises drill
Every question in this set tests one of the rules below. If any of them is unfamiliar, read the Articles lesson first — practice before the rule is understood mostly teaches you your own guesses.
- The B1 layer of articles is about categories: the + singular noun can represent a whole class in formal style.
- Zero article for abstract nouns, meals, languages, and 'purpose' institutions (school, prison, hospital, bed, work).
- The with superlatives, ordinals, and unique roles.
- Geography splits: zero article for single countries, cities, lakes and single mountains; the for rivers, seas, deserts, ranges and plural names.
