Reported speech is where every tense you have learned gets tested at once, because reporting somebody's words means moving all of them one step into the past. Present simple becomes past simple, present perfect and past simple both collapse into past perfect, will becomes would, can becomes could. On top of the tense shift sit the pronouns and the time and place words: I becomes he or she, tomorrow becomes the next day, here becomes there, this becomes that. Miss one of those and the sentence is still grammatical but no longer means what the speaker said.
The complications are what separate a B1 pass from a fail. Backshift is not compulsory when the statement is still true — she said she lives in Cardiff is perfectly correct if she still does. Questions lose their inversion entirely and take the word order of a statement, with if or whether standing in for a missing question word. Commands drop the tense system altogether and use told plus an infinitive. And say and tell are not interchangeable: you tell somebody something, but you say something to somebody. These sixty exercises drill all of it.
What these exercises drill
Every question in this set tests one of the rules below. If any of them is unfamiliar, read the Reported Speech and Backshift lesson first — practice before the rule is understood mostly teaches you your own guesses.
- After a past reporting verb, tenses step one back: present → past, past → past perfect, will → would.
- Pronouns, possessives and time words shift with the new perspective: today → that day, tomorrow → the next day, here → there.
- Reported questions use statement word order — no inversion, no question mark; yes/no questions take if/whether.
- Commands and requests become tell/ask + object + to-infinitive.

Reporting what people said is the point where grammar becomes summary writing. The connectors lesson is the natural companion, since a report of several statements needs joining as well as shifting.
