Mixed Conditionals: B2 Exercises

60 exercises · 20 multiple choice · 20 fill in the blank · 20 word ordering

The four numbered conditionals are a teaching convenience, not a description of English. Real sentences mix the times freely, because a cause and its consequence do not have to belong to the same period. If I'd taken that job, I'd be in Oslo now has a past condition and a present result; If she were more organised, she wouldn't have missed it reverses that, pinning a present characteristic to a past failure. Both are ordinary English and neither fits the numbered list, which is why learners who have memorised the list produce them so rarely.

The second half of this set is register. Formal written English can drop if altogether and invert instead: Had we known, we would have acted; Were the deal to collapse, we would lose everything; Should you need assistance, please contact reception. That last one is the single most common structure in customer correspondence in Britain, and it is worth being able to write as well as read. Around these sit the alternatives to if — provided, as long as, unless, in case — and the formal but for, which makes one factor responsible for everything that followed. Sixty exercises drill the mixing, the inversion and the connectors together, because in practice they arrive together.

Inversion appears here as a conditional device, but it is a much larger feature of formal English; the negative-adverb set takes the same subject-auxiliary swap and applies it to ordinary statements.
